A TRIP ROUND KATO #4 (7.03.2015)

Starting 7 March, on an unusual fence gallery surrounding the new Supersam, we will be able to see another Trip Round Kato exhibit. This time we will be showing the cultural side of the city and Katowice’s leading festivals, events, and activities. The fence on ul. Piotra Skargi 6 will feature photographs by Radosław Kaźmierczak who frequently takes pictures of local cultural events.

Only a few years ago, when Katowice began preparing to take part in the competition for the European Capital of Culture, many doubted the notion of the city’s candidature. Critical and even mocking voices were raised among even the city’s residents. They were heard saying: And where is the culture in Katowice? Nothing happens here! Today even those who are only minimally interested in the city’s cultural life no longer voice such opinions.

The fourth exhibition gracing the Supersam fence is a subjective look at some of the city’s more fascinating cultural events. Among the event descriptions and accompanying photographs we find festivals with long traditions, without which the city’s cultural calendar would seem incomplete, as well as relatively new activities. All the initiatives are linked by a high standard and an innovative approach to the presentation of culture. These are activities by which the organizers seek to shape the city’s culture and inspire the local residents. They are attracting people from other cities to come to Katowice and are making the stereotypical image of dirty Silesia a thing of the past.

The fourth edition of A Trip Round Kato will also be accompanied by the Moje Kato photography competition, in which everyone can take part. The organizers want to see the city through the eyes of its inhabitants, and as such, they are encouraging one and all to photograph Katowice. Submissions can be sent in until 9 April, to rajzapokato@gmail.com. Details on the competition, awards, and other initiatives in the Trip round Kato project can be found on the facebook.com/rajzapokato page and at griffin-artspace.com.
