Jan Dziaczkowski. Holiday Greetings – Czytelnia Sztuki / Museum in Gliwice 4.09-4.10.2015

Join us for Jan Dziaczkowski’s Holiday Greetings exhibition at the Czytelnia Sztuki in Gliwice!
The opening will take place on September 4, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. The exhibition runs until October 4. The project curator is Karol Hordziej.

Jan Dziaczkowski started making the first pieces for his Holiday Greetings series at the age of eighteen, upon returning home from a trip to Normandy, where he visited the Jacques Prévert House – a museum devoted to the French poet, playwright, and creator of Surrealist collages. This began the young artist’s lifelong adventure with collage, a technique in which he came to be known as an undisputed master. He created his most important works in a traditional manner, using paper, a scalpel, and glue, and at the same time making numerous digital montages for illustrated magazines. Dziaczkowski sparked a rebirth in the popularity of the collage in the younger generation of artists in Poland, and the international critics and art historians have compared him to such classic figures of the technique as Hanna Hoch, Linda Sterling, and John Stezaker.

In addition to the title series, the Holiday Greetings exhibition will include two others: Keine Grenze and Monkey Manor. All three series play with creating alternative versions of European culture. The title of the exhibition also alludes to the custom of sending vacation postcards, which Dziaczkowski collected and used as the basis for creating most of his works. The Czytelnia Sztuki exhibition is the first solo presentation of Jan Dziaczkowski’s collages since his tragic death, and a foretaste of the large solo exhibition of his work that will take place in October 2015 at Zachęta – National Gallery of Art in Warsaw.

The Visual Arts Foundation is a partner of the Holiday Greetings exhibition.
